Common A/C Problems

While we will repair any air conditioner problem out there, there are a few things we see more often than others. If you need A/C repairs, your problem is most likely one of the following things.

Air Filters

Most people change their air filters once or twice a year and don’t really think about it beyond that. Did you know, though, that you should change your air filter once a month, especially when your air conditioner is getting a lot of use?

The air filter’s job is to remove dust, debris, and other materials from the air and to keep them from clogging your air conditioner. It does this by basically sitting between your air intake and any air that gets blown back out. When you first install the filter, it should be fairly porous. It should not be hard for your air conditioner to pull air in through the filter.

Once the filter is full, though, it gets harder for the air conditioner to get the air it needs. It has to work harder like you would have to work harder to breathe if you had a thick scarf over your face. Over time, this can cause your air conditioner to break down earlier than you might have expected.

Thermostats

The thermostat tells the air conditioner how cold it is, so the air conditioner knows whether it should be on or off. If your thermostat breaks, your A/C may not know when to turn on or off. It may run constantly, which adds a lot of wear and tear to the motor, or it may not turn on at all. Either way, you will want to get the problem fixed so you can stay cool without damaging or overtaxing the motor on your A/C unit.

Refrigerant Leaks

The refrigerant in your air conditioner is what allows it to cool the air. These substances are housed inside the A/C unit. The warm air then passes through, over, and around them. Once that air is cold, it is blown back into the building, where it works to cool things off.

If your refrigerant is leaking, your air conditioner won’t function as well. It won’t be able to cool the warm air as effectively, so it won’t cool your home as effectively, either. Your HVAC technician will find the leak, repair it, test it, and then fill your air conditioner with the proper amount of refrigerant so it can cool your home again.

Electrical Fuses/Breakers

If your air conditioner blows a fuse here or there, it’s probably not a big deal. You can go to your local hardware store, get a new fuse, and have it installed quickly and easily. If, however, your air conditioner is blowing electrical fuses or breakers all the time, it’s definitely time to call in a professional.

Blowing fuses consistently can indicate that there is an electrical problem with your A/C unit. These can be caused by simple things, like overfull filters, to complex and dangerous wiring problems. The thing is, you won’t know what is causing the problem until you have it looked at. Avoid a potential fire hazard by calling an HVAC technician immediately.

Condenser

On an A/C unit, the condenser is where the magic happens. It helps the refrigerant stay cold, rather than getting heated by the warm air coming through the unit. It also has parts that push the hot air through the cold refrigerant, thereby cooling it off. Needless to say, if you are having condenser problems, your air conditioner won’t work very well. There are many things that can go wrong with this part, and only an experienced HVAC technician will be able to tell you what’s going on with it.

Compressors

The compressor works alongside the condenser to help your air conditioning refrigerant lose any heat it has picked up so it can continue cooling the air for your home. When it’s not working, your unit may still cool, or may cool for a while, but it won’t work as effectively as it has before. If the compressor goes out completely, the unit won’t be able to cool at all. We’ll figure out what is going on with your compressor and let you know the best way to proceed if it isn’t working well.
